FTA Card Blood Collection

FTA cards allow simple and reliable field collection while providing the laboratory with a stable source of DNA.  To ensure the best yield without cross-contamination of samples, begin with clean hands or gloves, a new piercing device for each animal, and allow the sampled card to dry completely before contacting other FTA cards. It is also critical that the tattoo and/or tag numbers are verified and recorded correctly onto the FTA card. Once the front flap is closed, samples can be stacked and banded together in batches for easy recording.  Place the batches in a resealable plastic bag. Overnight and refrigerated shipping are NOT required for samples preserved on FTA cards.

Please follow these simple steps to collect and preserve your herd's DNA.

fta1Step 1

  • Clearly record the animal's tattoo and/or tag number onto the FTA collection card in the alloted space.
  • Beginning with a new needle, prick a blood vessel in the animal's ear.

fta2Step 2

  • Touch the opened FTA card to the blood drop ensuring ample blood in the indicated circle.  Do not fully saturate the FTA card.
  • Three drops of blood from a syringe may also be used to fill the FTA card.

fta3Step 3

  • Allow the open FTA card to completely dry before closing and contacting other samples to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Close the front flap of the FTA card once dry.
  • Enclose samples in a resealable plastic bag before shipping to BioPet Vet Lab.
