How does sire testing work?

BioPet Vet Lab utilizes the microsatellite panel recommended by the International Society of Animal Genetics (ISAG) to perform Sire Verifier. BioPet generates a unique genetic profile for each animal using these markers. This profile identifies genetic information inherited from the dam and sire. Once analysis is complete, the profile consists of 22 alleles – 11 passed from the dam and 11 passed from the sire. One allele from the offspring must correspond to at least one allele of the potential sire to correctly identify the sire.

Ranchers need only take a small blood sample from a needle prick of the animal’s ear and collect it on a DNA collection card provided by BioPet.
