Cattle Proof of Parentage

How does parentage testing work?

BioPet Vet Lab utilizes the microsatellite panel recommended by the International Society of Animal Genetics (ISAG) to perform parentage verification. BioPet generates a unique genetic profile for each animal using these markers. This profile identifies genetic information inherited from the dam and sire. Once analysis is complete, we have a profile consisting of 22 alleles – 11 passed from the dam and 11 passed from the sire. The size value of the alleles of an offspring must correspond to those of a sire and dam in order to confirm parentage.

Why choose parentage testing?

Parentage testing provides you with all the benefits of Sire Verifier

  • Test sire, dam, and offspring
  • Manage your herd by matching calf to sire
  • Determine service performance for each bull
  • Add value for DNA validated animals at sale

PLUS

  • Verified records for herd registration
  • Match calf to dam in calf abandonment cases

In addition to parentage testing, BioPet will retain your animal’s DNA on file as proof of identity. Ear-tags, electronic ID, and transponder identification methods can become separated or altered. DNA is the unalterable form of identification.

Testing with BioPet is Easy

Ranchers need only take a small blood sample from a needle prick of the animal’s ear and collect it on a DNA collection card provided by BioPet. Ranchers label the cards with the animal’s identification number and mail them back to BioPet for processing. BioPet’s laboratory is stocked with top DNA analyzing equipment which enables us to provide a fast turnaround time.
